Brunel Climbing also known as BUMS (Brunel University Mountaineering Society) is a climbing club for Students and Staff who are members of Brunel University.
When and Where?
Thursday 5pm – 8pm
Sunday 3pm – 6pm
We climb at the Brunel wall (main sports hall) twice a week during term time. Further to this there is also a free climb period for ‘signed off’ members on Tuesdays & Thursdays 7-8pm and Sundays 12-2pm.
After the lesson we often head up to in Bar Zest (located upstairs in the sports centre), so come up and socialise!
Up until recently we were taught by Mike Brightwell, a very capable professional instructor who has about 270 years of experience. Mike and his partner Prof were with Brunel Climbing from the very beginning and believe it or not, are in fact the very people who designed the Brunel wall so that it can offer different skill levels/challenges with examples of traditional and sport climbing for all abilities.
Mike and Prof’s help can never be forgotten and we were all very sad to see them leave in 2012 but wish them well for the future, and who knows, you might still see them around if you are lucky!
Former president of the club, Tom is now our fully bearded and qualified teacher. He’ll teach you from the beginning to the end of the year, in which you’ll learn the basics of belaying and tying the right knots, all the way to setting up a multi pitch anchor half way up a mountain. Along with Tom, a few of the exec members will be teaching and signing off the new members to the club at the beginning of the year, however, Tom will be teaching the more advanced lessons towards the end of the year on his own.
